Bonnie Hughes of Arcadia, Michigan found these account ledgers from the C. W. Perry store in Pierport, Michigan. Although they are badly damaged and incomplete, they clearly show William Quimby's account.
The front of each ledger has alphabetically tabbed sections listing each account. Next to each person's name is at least one page number identifying where to find that person's account details. When the account details filled up the available space in a section of the ledger, the person maintaining the ledger would begin recording details on another page and edit the numbers listed up front next to the account holder's name by crossing off the old page number and adding the new one. The earliest account details for William Quimby are dated January 1st 1878. However, the entry references an earlier, now missing ledger. "To Bal For'd Old Ledger" The last entry in the account is dated July 17, 1887, but it appears to be an account management entry. The last purchase appears to have occurred in 1885. |
